SOUTHERN COMPLEX WORK LEADS TO DISTINGUISHED AWARD

STAFFORD TOWNSHIP - Ocean County’s recently completed new Southern County Government Complex on Haywood Road, here, has been heralded as an example of superior work by the American Council of Engineering Companies of New Jersey.

"This was a major undertaking for Ocean County," said Freeholder Director John C. Bartlett Jr. "This was a $21 million project that came in on schedule and at budget. This was achieved by the cooperation of all the partners involved in its construction working with the County."

One such partner was Hatch Mott McDonald which was retained by Ocean County to lead the team to plan and file required permit applications and to design the 23-acre complex.

The company’s efforts resulted in the complex receiving a "Distinguished Award" from the American Council of Engineering Companies of New Jersey.

The site consists of a mix of government agencies that gives residents improved access to a host of services.

A centerpiece of the complex is the new full service 42,000 square foot recycling center, scalehouse office and recycling building. In addition to the new 24-hour drop-off for bottles, cans, newspapers, mixed paper, cardboard, old clothing and household batteries, other items that can be recycled during normal hours of operation include tires, waste oil, anti-freeze, computers, cell phones, leaves, brush, empty steel paint cans, paint, car batteries and household batteries. There is also an area for residential compost.

"This complex brings a host of programs and services to southern Ocean County in new state of the art facilities, replacing old and outdated structures," said Freeholder James F. Lacey, who serves as liaison to Solid Waste Management. "I am particularly pleased with the new recycling and solid waste facilities that are at the complex. They are very popular with the residents and that results in environmental and financial benefits."

The complex also houses offices for the Ocean County Board of Social Services at 333 Haywood Road, with 17,756, square feet of work space. Also housed with the Board of Social Services is an Ocean County Health Department Satellite office, which includes a dental clinic.

In addition the complex includes a 13,500 square foot Ocean County Road department garage, along with a 21,000 square foot building for Vehicle Services, and a 900-square foot facility for Transportation.

The transportation facility currently serves as a temporary home for the Ocean County Clerk’s Office and the Ocean County Surrogate’s Office, until new space becomes available for those services.

A new animal shelter to serve Southern Ocean County is also located at the complex.
