ROUTE 537 & 539 INTERSECTION IMPROVEMENTS PLANNED FOR PLUMSTED; BERKELEY’S DOVER ROAD TO BE RECONSTRUCTED

THE INTERSECTION of county routes 537 and 539 in Plumsted Township will be improved and a nearby bridge replaced under an estimated $2.9 million project to begin later this year.

The intersection improvements include the addition of left turn lanes in all four directions.

“We’ve recently installed an upgraded traffic signal to the intersection and the addition of these dedicated turn lanes will improve safety for both motorists and pedestrians,” said Freeholder John P. Kelly, Director of Law and Public Safety for the county.

The bridge, located on Route 537 near the Deep Run community, will also have full shoulders, leaving ample room for motor vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians, Kelly said.

The project will also add a left-turn lane to Route 537 at the entrance to the Deep Run development.

Freeholder Director James F. Lacey said the project should begin this fall and be completed by the summer of 2010.

“We’ll get this out to bid in a few weeks and hopefully be under construction before the cold weather hits,” Lacey said.

The Ocean County Board of Chosen Freeholders is also expected to seek bids for the reconstruction of a portion of Dover Road in Berkeley Township and the Borough of South Toms River.

A 3.1-mile stretch of roadway from Pinewald-Keswick Road to Chamberlain Street just west of Double Trouble Road will be reconstructed, Lacey said.

The estimated $1.6 million project should be under way this fall and completed by the end of the year, he said.
